How much to budget? |
| At
minimum, you need enough to cover submission to Yahoo. This
is because the flat $300 annual fee that Yahoo charges should
pay for itself in traffic for most people. That's the absolute
minimum recommended budget for any site. Again, you can get
listed for free, as will be explained in this section, but your
traffic will be higher if you set aside the amount shown above. |
The Minimum
Budget:
 | Yahoo = $300 |
 | Inktomi = $40 |
 | AltaVista = $40
|
 | Ask Jeeves = $30 |
 | Google = $100 |
 | Total = $510.00 Plus

I Need To Be Listed Fast! |
| Often,
those who launch new web sites want to appear in search engines
right away. In these cases, you'll need to budget more money. By
paying an "inclusion" fee to some of the crawler-based search
engines, you can shorten the usual month delay of appearing to
only a few days. The one-time fees are shown below, by the major
crawlers that offer such programs: |
Crawler Budget
(paid to the Crawler)
 | Inktomi = $40
|
 | AltaVista = $40
|
 | FAST (via Lycos) = $30 |
 | Ask Jeeves/Tacoma = $30
|
 | Total = $140
|
 | I said these are
one-time fees, but you'll see that they are charged on a
six-month or yearly basis. |
|
|
Paid Listings Are Also
Fast |
|
Another key option to getting listed faster is to
consider using paid listing programs. The budget below will get
you going for at least a month, in most cases. For LookSmart, it
will cover you for a year. |
Paid Listings
Budget (paid to the
Search
Engine Company)
 | LookSmart = $300 |
 | Overture (GoTo) = $100 |
 | Google = $100 |
 | FindWhat = $50 |
 | Total = $550 |
|
|
Now let's put it all together. Here's the
ideal amount you would budget, if you want to show up in the
widest range of important search engines within a matter of
days: |
|
Doorway/Hallway pages |
Creating an additional 10 subdirectories with 25
pages in each directory pointing to the Home page is very
important.
 | Start submission as soon
as possible as only 1 page per URL can be submitted per day.
|
 | It is better to have
purchased additional 10 site names and put copies of the
doorway/hallway pages on them as well all pointing to the home
page. That way you can submit one page from each of the
additional sites each day. Cutting down the submission time by
a factor of 10. |
 | Ten times 25 equals 250
pages + the site's pages with that number of pages you are
looking at over 8 months of submissions to complete all the
pages. |
|
Submission
Robot
 | Once your site and your doorway pages are
created we then have to code every name of every file into a
Submission Robot (there is no simple way to up load the names,
it's a one by one job). |
 | We also have to code in a "double check" to
verify the page for validity (this is important). |
 | We then run a weekly check for the first
month or two and then bi-weekly to check your page ratings.
This will allow the Meta-tags to be tweaked and other Search
criteria to be optimized. |
 | Doorway/Hallway pages typically cost $800
to $1000 to construct |
 | Setup $200
Monthly $75 x 8 months = $600 |
|
|
Search Engine Submission Budget |
 | Crawler $140 |
 | Paid listings $550 |
 | Doorways $800 |
 | Robot $800 |
 | Total for all $2,290 |
 | Plus. of course, the
building of your site |
